ATSUM launches indefinite economic blockade IMPHAL, Aug 22 : The All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) has decided to carry on their agitation by imposing an indefinite economic blockade on all the National Highways effectively from the midnight of August 22, according to a statement issued by its general secretary. The statement said that the Manipur University authorities who were determined to implement the Central Education Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2005 a few years back are now trying every possible means and tricks under their disposal to delay the implementation of the amended version of the said Act even though the University Grant Commission had given a clear instruction in September 2012 to abide by the Act. ATSUM would accept no further excuses from any authority concerned, the statement said. Asserting that their demand is nothing but a share of what is rightful, the statement said that it would accept no further excuses from any authority concerned. The statement also put forward certain agenda of ATSUM. It included a demand to the State Government to settle the Manipur Reservation of Vacancies in Posts and Services (for SC/ST) Act, 1976; recruitment of teachers in Jiribam sub-division on District Cadre Basis and also in all the hill districts of Manipur; implementation of the Tribal Sub-Plan to bridge the gap between the tribal and others in developmental works. The statement also warned not to introduce any schemes or policy like the New Land Use Policy (NLUP) that is of concern to the tribals in Manipur when the long standing demands of the State including autonomy and full functioning of the Hill Areas Committee remain unaddressed.
