ATTENTION, CKSCIANS! It is alarming how rampant robberies are becoming in our country. Robbers are becoming bolder and even scarier. Please be extra careful. Here are some safety reminders: 1. Stay alert. Avoid distractions. Do not listen to music or text or talk on the phone while walking or while in public. Be aware of your surroundings. 2. Avoid dangerous areas-- day OR night. There are people who get robbed in broad daylight. Previously safe areas can now be unsafe. 3. Travel with a partner or in groups. If you live close to a friends house and both of you need to commute, arrange to do so together. If possible, carpool. Try to travel with others, walk in well-traveled areas, and at night, in well-lighted areas. 4. If you feel that you are being followed, go inside a supermarket, store, coffee shop, or restaurant. 5. Dress simply. Do not wear jewelry. 6. Dont bring too much money with you. 7. Avoid bringing fancy gadgets to school. If you must, make sure you conceal in your bag. Dont carry around a laptop bag. Dont let it be obvious that you have a laptop or a tablet with you. Do not display your electronics. 8. Do not go home late. Even for a school project. If you must stay late to work on school requirements, arrange to have a family member pick you up. If this is not possible, just stay overnight at your groupmates and go home the next day. Remember, the ber months are upon us, and it gets dark earlier. With the internet, maybe it is possible for you and your groupmates to coordinate and work on your project online, in the safety of your home. Go home early-- even if you live near school. 9. Do not appear lost, or distracted, or tired. Do not nap in the jeepney or the bus. 10. If you frequent high risk areas, try to carry a muggers wallet -- put in only a little cash. Keep your jewelry/ other cash/ phone in hidden pockets, if possible. 11. Do not talk to strangers. If somebody you do not know asks you for the time, money, or directions, pretend you didnt hear and walk faster. 12. Do not display large amounts of cash when paying for items you purchased. 13. Do not hold your bag in your hand. Sling the strap of your bag across your shoulders, and keep your bag in front. 14. Do not put your phone or wallet in your back pocket. Put them in your front pocket. Wear tops that would allow you to conceal your pockets. Be safe! Take good care of yourself and look after your friends/ classmates/ schoolmates. God bless you.
