AUSTRALIA CALL CENTERS JOBS WILL DISAPPEAR IN FIVE YEARS PERIOD AS BEING REPLACED BY ONLINE INTERACTION IN THE COUNTRY Telstra boss David Thodey has told ABC radio that he believes the company’s call centre jobs will be gone in five years, replaced by online interaction. In the reality these jobs will not exist in five years. Think about how you interact with a bank today. You dont go into the bank branch that often and thats going to be the truth, I think, about many of the traditional service-related jobs,” he said in an interview with Jon Faine on ABC Melbourne’s 774 radio morning show. Its going to be more and more digitally done, as difficult as that is to face. The off-shoring is a temporary sort of step. But he said Telstras plans to expand its operations overseas, it will remain a “significant employer“ in Australia, despite the contrast between its current workforce of 37,000 and the and the 75,000 it employed at its peak before deregulation in the 1990s and the company’s subsequent privatisation. We finished last year in Australia with 400 additional jobs in Australia, Thodey said. The problem is it was a different set of jobs than they were before. This is like any large company. We need to keep reinventing ourselves.
