AVALANCHE HAZARD UPDATE: Weather is changing and back country folks especially should be aware. Here is todays update from local avalanche hazard advisor Steve Hoots Witsoe. As always, please read the report in its entirety for backcountry and weather forecast. 10 a.m. Thursday, January 8, 2015 COPPER RIVER HIGHWAY AVALANCHE HAZARD Current: MODERATE Outlook: The avalanche hazard should remain the same through next week. BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE HAZARD Above Tree Line: CONSIDERABLE Avoid steep slopes. Tree Line: MODERATE Avoid large paths. Below Tree Line: LOW Another warm storm before New Year left us with no snow below 1500 feet and 3 to 5 feet in the upper mountains. Since then, cold dry weather has promoted faceting. Expect rain, heavy at times today. Models suggest 2 inches of water. Temperatures will be warm with the freezing level well above our local peaks. Avalanche activity may occur in the upper mountains, though our snowpack has been fairly well tested with rain. Also, our shallow snowpack should limit avalanches from traveling far. Avalanches are not expected to reach the highway. Precipitation should taper Friday, but we look to stay warm and wet through next week. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
