About 12 years ago I got back into weight training after an extended hiatus. I was 145 pounds, had no idea what I was doing. An eating disorder left me with less muscle mass than I had when I was 12. One day I was over in the squat rack doing a few easy knee bends with about 65 pounds on the bar and this woman comes up to me- she was about 5 foot nothing, and Id guess 145 pounds- half of that in each thigh. She said What are you doing? Squatting, I answered. She raised an eyebrow. No. Whatever that shit is, it isnt squatting. You want to learn how to squat, come to this address tomorrow. I gave her a look of death, but took the card with the address and decided to go. It was really just her garage gym, where she and her husband worked out. For three hours straight she taught me how to squat. No compensation needed, didnt even want a thank you. She was just paying it forward. She was a damn good Olympic lifter, too, whod been training for 15+ years and figured, because of her love of the sport, shed do her best to make it grow. I am INFINITELY grateful to this person, both for what she did and for how rare this is. I was one of those guys that I see being pointed at and laughed at all the time, especially on social media- shit, Im guilty of that too. But god damn. If shed been just another person laughing at that skinny douche doing quarter squats in the rack, who knows what woulda changed. Most of you have probably had similar experiences. So... every now and then, pay it forward. If youre really that damn good at what you do, it costs you nothing to pass on a few tips, or give some helpful advice rather than pointing and mocking.
