About 20 years ago I purchased a book called, I Am Not Spock by Leonard Nimoy. I tracked him down at book signing in DC and got him to autograph it. Mission Successful. He was attempting to break the stereotype. At the time he was trying to regain his identity as an Actor and not as the icon, Spock. Then about 12 years ago I purchased a book called I Am Spock. Nimoy had changed his tune and decided to fully embrace the character and the legacy he had built. Found him at Borders in DC. Again, personalized autographed copy secured. Way cool, right? Then, about 9 years ago I let my boss borrow it. At the same time, he lent to me a copy of a book called, The Physics of Star Trek. It too was autographed, by Gene Roddenberry. Unfortunately and tragically, my manager and friend, Paul Cooke, was killed during a family dispute during this time. I never got I Am Spock back and I would never ask for it in the face of that tragedy. But now, I still have Pauls book. The autograph inside includes the message, To my friend Paul, Going where no man has gone before, All the best, Gene Roddenberry. I checked on ebay and the cost of the book goes anywhere from 4 to 20 bucks or so. Some Roddenberry autographed materials, mostly official documents go for several thousands of dollars. I cant find the specific book I have that is also autographed so I really cant get a feel on what its true value is in dollars. To me, its priceless and Im not selling it. The only drawback is that the autograph is made out to Paul and my name is Claude. Still, its Genes handwriting and his signature. It just would be nice to know what its market value is.
