About 20 years ago, a group of students searched through the woods to find the remains of Fort Webb, a civil war Lunette fort that was positioned to observe, and supposedly defend, against Union gunboats coming up the river. When they found it, they cleaned it up and the city erected markers for Fort Webb park. But, its rarely visited by much more than curious trail walkers, and is growing over again. The little fort was never designed to hold off ground troops, but was pretty much a gunnery fort, with a battery of 12 pound cannon, which was pretty darned big for the day. How effective it could have been was never found out. The confederates abandoned the fort along with the city the night before the Union siege was to begin.
