About 6 months ago I did a selfish thing and took a big step back - TopicsExpress

About 6 months ago I did a selfish thing and took a big step back from rescue. I decided to no longer be deeply involved with a certain rescue group and to just contribute in a general sense. There were two main reasons for this. The biggest was I didnt agree with certain standards and I refuse to compromise when the well being an animal is at stake, especially in way of vetting. I (meaning people in general) have to be their voice. My next reason for stepping back (and most selfish) is the overwhelming feeling that was taking over and I felt as though I was involved enough to help a ton of animals (investing every second of my personal life) but at the end of the day didnt feel like I was making an impact at all. Its also important to me to keep my priorities straight. Im passionate about rescue but I have to be most passionate about my husband, family, friends and my own pets. I refuse to make them suffer as a result of trying to help. There are SO many animals who need help but you absolutely have to know when to say no, I cant help. Thats by far the hardest thing to do but if I overwhelm myself to the point where I cant help at all, then what good have I done? Im not trying to toot my own as its not mine that needs to be tooted, so hear me out. Since stepping back I have helped multiple families stay together. These were families who are going to surrender their pets due to financial hardship or training issues. At that point, I get in my car and go purchase dog/cat food, litter, etc. Most importantly I post on Facebook and you super awesome people step up to contribute. Every. Single. Time. Im no trainer but if a family is looking to rehome their dog because of basic issues, I can guide them through that. Doing these things for people without asking for anything in return opens the door for me to discuss spay and neuter with people without them feeling like in preaching to them. As a result, in the past two months WE (you guys never fail me. Theres always someone who is able to pitch in $5-10 toward a surgery or some of you who volunteer to completely sponsor a pet) have spayed/neutered 8 pets. EIGHT. Thats 8 pets that get to stay with their families since affording dog/cat food isnt an issue now. Thats 8 pets that will not be having litter after litter. Ive finally found my niche, where I feel like I can really make an impact. I just felt like a HUGE Thank You was long overdue. Its easy to get caught up in work, errands...life, and forget to pause. So many of you reading this (if youre still reading...sorry this is so long) have contacted me about wanting to contribute in way of money, food, supplies, etc. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. There is so much good in this world. Youre only going to find what youre looking for.
