About an hour ago, a friend texted to let me know she was in the neighborhood, and can she and her kids come by? My first inclination was to say no, because our house is a bit disheveled from some ongoing projects. But then I decided—you know? Shes my FRIEND. She wont care. And guess what... she didnt. We had a grand time sipping coffee, catching up, and letting the kids run around. I didnt worry about the crumbs on the floor or the toy explosion, and instead we just talked about life, work, and our daily liturgies. This is the very thing I wrote about in #NotesFromaBlueBike, the thing I think we miss so often in our fast-paced western culture—the beauty of living slowly enough to welcome relationships in our lives when they come our way. Its a lesson I still need to learn. Sure, I still have a to-do list...but if I had prioritized that, like I almost did, I would have missed out on a lovely spring morning sipping coffee with a friend. There are times when we have to focus on our checklist, sure. But those times arent as urgent and as frequent as they usually seem. Im glad I said yes. How can you say yes to relationships over to-do lists today?
