Absolutely wonderful news today that cabinet has approved a recommendation to ban shark finning. Shark finning is the practice of cutting off a sharks fin while it is still alive, and throwing away the carcass. Banning shark finning alone will not reduce the number of sharks being killed. T&T is the number 6 exporter of shark fin to Hong Kong. To stop this we must ban the landing, trade, import and export of shark fin. We are happy that this shark conservation debate is taking place at the highest level and we continue to lobby for the implementation of a shark sanctuary in Trinidad & Tobago. Sharks are apex predators and often a keystone species. They keep the ocean ecosystem healthy and productive. Many species are hurtling towards extinction We should not be spooning sharks out of soup bowls or eating them fried in a bake. It is a national tradition to eat shark, but when traditions become unsustainable we must change them. Loving good food is T&T culture, eating endangered species is not. This is why we ask that you consider eating a sustainable alternative to shark instead, like flying fish. Its also much healthier. Shark meat is full of mercury, a neurotoxin, and pregnant women and children should never eat it. Marc de Verteuil
