Accomac Shire was established in the Virginia colony in 1634 under direction by King Charles I, and was one of the eight shires of Virginia. The name was derived from the Native American word Accawmack. In 1642, it was changed to Northampton County by the English to try and eliminate Native American names in the New World. In 1663, Northampton County was split into two counties that still exist today. The northern two-thirds became Accomac County again. In 1940, the General Assembly added a k to the countys name, and today we know it as Accomack County. #triviatuesday
