According to legend, tamerlanes chinese wife Bibi Khanum,seeking to surprise him on his return from his Indian campaign of 1398-99,commissioned this colossal monument (later known to be Bibi Khanum mosque). In the kings absence, the persian architect fell in love with Bibi Khanum. She attempted to dissuade him from his infatuation and presented him with twelve decorated eggs,saying that although they looked different,essentially they were the same,as is the case with women. The architect replied by presenting Bibi Khanum with a glass of red wine and glass of white wine. They may seem similar,he explained,but I prefer one to the other. On his return Tamerlane became suspicious,declaring that only a man in love could have created such a magnificient monument. When he saw the scar left on Bibi Khaums cheek from her admirers kiss,Tamerlane sent a detachment to seize the architect dead or alive, but he fled up one of the soaring minarets,leaped off,and,so the story goes,flew back to Persia.
