According to reports, the senior men’s national beach soccer team will begin a training camp today at the Bahamas Football Association’s (BFA) Beach Soccer and Futsal Facility for the World Cup Qualifiers in May of 2015. The Bahamas is ranked as the number one beach soccer team in the Caribbean, and number six in the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) region. In general here in The Bahamas, the Quality Beach Soccer (QBS) Club has been a major player in promoting the sport. Founders of the club, Ehren Hanna and Christopher Davis, recently returned home after a brief stint with the BSC Sable Dancers Bern of the Swiss Beach Soccer League. Davis and Hanna are members of both the lawn and beach national teams, and are looking to implement some of the skills and techniques learned abroad at the training camp. “Going to Switzerland and getting to play with the team was a unique experience and it will definitely help with our development. We are looking to get everyone training early and enhance our techniques so that we can have an edge when we compete in the region. We’re already ranked number one in the Caribbean and I think the techniques learned will help us to qualify for the World Cup,” said Hanna. The Sable Dancers won the league championship, and both athletes contributed mightily to the team’s successful playoff run. They consider it an eye-opening experience. “It was a different level of football. We played against the likes of some of the top players in Europe and although it took time for us to get adjusted, we maintained a satisfactory role on the team. For me personally, I was an alternate for last year’s top goal scorer and this year’s second top goal scorer, Charles Tearii Labaste,” said Hanna. The men’s beach team is comprised of a lot of players from the national lawn soccer team, who were introduced to the grass alternative through QBS. The sport itself is a very young one here in The Bahamas, getting its start in 1992. However, it is growing by leaps and bounds, and The Bahamas is looking to make a name for itself as a power player in the region. QBS is actively involved in games and is also in communication with clubs and leagues from all around the world. In its short time of existence, the club has already fielded a team for the North American Sand Soccer Championships (NASSC), which is the worlds largest amateur beach soccer festival, hosted at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on the Atlantic coast. QBS also hosts an annual youth summer camp with the intention of developing players early. The club officially named its first under-16 squad earlier this year.
