According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, Worldwide, osteoporosis causes more than 8.9 million fractures annually, resulting in an osteoporotic fracture every 3 seconds... [and] 1 in 3 women over 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures... Because our patients come from many different backgrounds, we offer the ability to perform an osteoporosis scan at our Main Office through the use of a DXA scan. A DXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) scan is a bone density test that assesses whether you have normal bone density or low bone density (also referred to as osteopenia or osteoporosis). Typically, a DXA scan measures your bone density at the hips and lumbar spine, which is where most osteoporotic-related fractures occur. A DXA scan is painless and takes only 10-15 minutes. You lie on your back on an imaging table and the scanner passes over your body. The DXA scan emits a very low level of radiation, about 1/10th that of a chest x-ray. Here at Drs. May-Grant Associates, we have two Certified Bone Densitometry Technologists (CBDT) as well as our own Bone Desitometrist who will interpret the scan results. The results of your DXA are then given to your provider to discuss any necessary treatment options Ask your provider today if a DXA scan is right for you.
