According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime; an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year; and most cases of domestic violence are never reported. It was against this sobering context that a list of the Hudson Valley’s finest musicians gathered at Levon Helm Studios Friday night to raise money for #familyofwoodstock s #WashbourneHouse, a refuge in Ulster County for victims of domestic violence. Led by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Elizabeth Littleton, Amy Helm, Natalie Merchant, Simi Stone Music Page, Happy Traum, Catherine Russell, Connor Kennedy, David Aaron Berger, Michael J Merenda Jr, Ruth Merenda, Jay Ungar, Molly Mason and others performed a whole bunch of very stirring, non-traditional Christmas songs. There was a packed house and, in addition to helping out some folks who need assistance, the evening paid tribute to one of the late Levon Helm’s most enduring legacies, performing benefit concerts over decades...for local schools, and many others, including victims of Hurricane Sandy. There was a lot of great music and a lot of fun was had. But even more than than, Friday night’s show was a testament to what Hudson Valley residents do best – and that’s look out for one another.
