Achieving environmental sustainability, gender equality and womens empowerment are closely intertwined. Based on the traditional responsibilities that women hold - such as collecting clean water or tending crops - they possess critical insight into the importance of resource management in their communities. However, womens voices are often overlooked in environmental policy-making. Citing the examples of the late Nobel Laureate, Wangari Maathai, there is hope that future sustainable development agendas discussed at last months first UN Environment Assembly will include mechanisms that assess environmental policies impact on women.
