Achill Island is literally on Irelands west coast as it is so - TopicsExpress

Achill Island is literally on Irelands west coast as it is so close to the Irish coastline that a short causeway bridges it to the mainland. Part of County Mayo, it is certainly one of the most beautiful places in all of Ireland and if you are from Cleveland, Ohio and your name is Sweeney, Gallagher, or OMalley among other names, you know it as home or the home of your ancestors. Cleveland is nicknamed Little Achill because of its rich Achill Island diaspora. Many of the Achill islanders hail from the one village pictured here, the townlet of Dooagh (pronounced Doo-Ahhh). Achill suffered terribly during the famine years and that accounts for many of the large numbers that initially left and came to America and Canada. Lack of upward mobility and opportunity caused many more for to leave in the decades that followed. Today, Achill is a desired destination or should be to the Irish traveler. The island has many very good B&Bs and boasts at least three 4 star beaches like the one pictured here at Keel.
