Acid attack aftermath: Protest in varsity and Srinagar “Arrest and punish the attackers” Srinagar || Amid boycotting class work, hundreds of students Friday staged a massive protest in Kashmir University, demanding authorities bring to an end to acid attacks on young women that has sparked horror and outrage. The students demanded immediate arrest and stringent punishment to the attackers involved in Thursday acid attack on a Law Student at Nowshera Srinagar. Pertinently, a 22-year-old Law student was Thursday injured in an acid attack by unidentified car-borne youth outside her college in Nowshehra area of Srinagar city. Male and female students of Kashmir University horrified by the vicious assault, gathered in front of administrative block, calling on the authorities to put an end to the crimes which has highlighted the striking challenges girls face in Kashmir. “Stop violence against women,” “Hang the attackers,” “Arrest the attackers” and, “Stop acid attacks” read the placards held by both male and female protesters. “How can you live in the society and remain indifferent towards such horrible attacks,” a female Law graduate who was part of the protest said. Another protestor said that acid attacks are reprehensible and repugnant and this crime is even worse than murder. The protesting students boycotted the class work and expressed solidarity with the victims family. Meanwhile, the students of Kashmir Law College staged a protest against the acid attack in Press Enclave on Friday. The students demanded life imprisonment for the attackers and urged upon the government to provide a government job to the victim and also take care of her medication. Talking to reporters one of the protestors and classmate of the victims, Arooj said that todayor tomorrow culprits will get arrested anyhow but the victim will suffer whole life. She said that to secure her future, the government should provide her government job and should also shift her outside state for specialized treatment. “There is Supreme Court ruling under section 3(57A) which reads that any acid attack victim should given a government job and further the government should take care of the medical expenditure of the victim,” she said. She added that the Supreme Court judgment clearly instructs the state government to check the ledger of any acid seller on daily basis and prohibit them to sell acid to any person below 18 years. “Neither the government check the ledger of acid sellers nor it takes measures to prevent such attacks in future,” she said. Another student said that the culprits should be given stringent punishment which should be deterrent for others. Social activists and lawyers who were also part of the protest urged upon the police to nab the culprits without wasting time. “Police is busy in poll process and has been taking no swift action to nab the culprits who are still at large,” they said. Hurriyat Conference leader Javid Ahmed Mir who was also part of the protest said that if government fails to prevent such acts in future and did not punish the culprits then Hurriyat will itself take measures in this regard. He said that killers of Romana Bashir are still roaming free while police has failed to collect evidences against the killers. “The recent acid attack is a heinous crime and we demand immediate arrest and stringent punishment for the attackers,” he said.
