Across all African communities, both continental and in the diaspora, there exists the understanding of the influence primordial entities/ deities/forces of nature can have on the human experience. These forces are available for communication with us to assist us as necessary in attaining life purpose and also to punitively correct us to learn better when we transgress. They usually have custodians, now known as shaman/traditional priests, who undergo years of training to understand how to work with these forces. It is the existence of these forces that has led to the stigmatisation of African spirituality as polytheistic.
