Activist: We cant even manage our toilets, how to manage an incinerator? PETALING JAYA (June 19): Plans to construct an incinerator at Taman Beringin, Kepong – which the residents claim is one in a proposed series of four nationwide – has been met with heavy opposition. On one side, residents in Kepong are against the idea of what they say is an RM800 million facility spewing harmful gases into the atmosphere which will be built in an area that is densely populated. On the other, the federal government is grappling with the solid waste management issue – what with its failure to implement the 3Rs of waste management – reduce, reuse, recycle – and the headache of how to deal with an ever increasing pile of garbage and where to dump it. The environmentalists are divided – some with the government and some with the residents – but sceptical as to whether the government can maintain incinerators. The National Solid Waste Management Department director general Datuk Dr Nadzri Yahaya believes there is a need for incinerators as at the moment, Malaysias recycling rate was at a dismal 10%.
