Activists march against adda pallakki! Activists and religious leaders under the banner of Basava Shanmukh Shivayogi Sharanara Balaga on Monday staged a silent march with black bands across their mouths in Gulbarga, protesting against the proposed Adda Pallakki Utsava of the Rambhapuri Mutt pontiff at Jewargi on October 14. Activists, led by Sulphul Mutt pontiff Mahant Shivacharya, Neela K of Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane and Zilla Panchayat member Shobha Bani, went in procession from Kannada Bhavan to DC N V Prasad’s office. They submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. They alleged that vested interests were trying to destroy communal harmony in Jewargi with the Adda Pallaki. They said many Dalit and progressive organisations and followers of the Sharana philosophy have raised their voice against the Adda Pallakki, where a human being is carried in procession, rather than a god. The Balaga alleged that the Rambhapuri pontiff had stated at Jewargi that he was firm on the Adda Pallakki and if necessary, people from outside would come to make it a success. The Balaga stated in the memorandum: “The situation is tense in Jewargi. The CM should instruct the district administration to ban Adda Pallakki and to send Rambhapuri pontiff out of the district.’’ Sources in the Balaga said that a delegation of progressive thinkers under the leadership of Urilinga Peddi Mutt Jnana Prakash Swami, Nidumamidi pontiff, former chairman of Backward Classes Commission Dwarakanath met the Chief Minister in Bangalore on Monday and requested him to instruct the Gulbarga Deputy Commissioner to ban the proposed Adda Pallakki. They also brought to the notice of the CM a ban already issued by the Maharashtra government about such a practice. JD(S) leader Kedaralingayya Hiremath, who had worked out a temporary rapprochement between the two groups, along with Congress MLC Allamaprabhu Patil and former MLA from the BJP, Doddannagouda Patil Naribol, said he would continue to strive for it till the day of Adda Pallakki. He said he had sought the help of Union Minister Mallikarjun M Kharge and former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa.
