Actual dialog from my gr 10 class, and I find myself in this - TopicsExpress

Actual dialog from my gr 10 class, and I find myself in this situation more and more. Me: OK *student name here*, can you please read the words on this sheet for me? *hands student sheet* Student: no. Me: why not? Student: because I cant read cursive. Have they stopped teaching this in grade school? I remember having to fill out pages and pages of practice cursive in gr. 2. I dont mind messy writing, but many students I see now in high school can barely write on the line or form coherent letters. Im not trying to insult students, its not their fault. We need to teach/drill in the basics of forming letters before I can talk about schwa, r-controlled syllables or comparative adjectives. Furthermore, the fundamental problem is that students dont read enough on their own now, so word recognition is very low. I can teach special remedial programs that break down language all I want, but nothing but practicing reading will teach the difference between dye and die Thoughts?
