Actually, the word literally meant black, originally. In many languages, some form of nigger means black in a literal sense. Negro and negger are both words that mean black. The degradation came from the instances and meaning of the intended user. Words change in original meaning all of the time. This is why I refuse to accept that nigger has to have a negative connotation. If people stop using the word in a negative manner, it will, with time, change meanings again. Allowing someones idiocy change how I perceive anything is abhorrent to me. I cannot accept that I need to change because someone else is foolish. Try to educate a fool instead of always accommodating one.
