Adam Chupp, a Ph.D. candidate at Southern Illinois University, won 2nd place for best student presentation at the Annual Southern Forest Insect Work Conference in New Orleans, LA a few weeks ago. Adam is studying the impacts of Laurel Wilt Disease on local plant and animal species here, at the Reserve. Palamedes Swallowtail butterflies use Redbay, a plant that is being negatively affected by this Laurel Wilt Disease, as a host plant during their larval stage. Adam is researching the widespread mortality of Redbay and investigating the potential for Palamedes Swallowtail butterflies to use other host plants in place of Redbay.
