Affordable Care Act Open Enrollment Starts Today Whether you agree or disagree with the Affordable Care Act, one thing is cer-tain: Open enrollment in the Marketplace for healthcare starts today, October 1. Coverage will begin on January 1, 2014. The new online Health Insurance Mar-ketplace provides families and small businesses who currently don’t have insur-ance, or are looking for a better deal, a new way to find health coverage that fits their needs and their budgets. According to the U.S Department of Health & Human Services, the 86% of Ohio-ans who have insurance now have more choices and stronger coverage than ever before. And for the 14% of Ohioans who don’t have insurance, or Ohio families and small businesses who buy their coverage but aren’t happy with it, a new day is only a few months away. The Health Insurance Marketplace will allow individuals and small businesses to compare health plans, get answers to questions, find out if they are eligible for tax credits for private insurance or health programs like the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and enroll in a health plan that meets their needs. Many of the middle and low-income families or individuals served by MYCAP will get tax credits that cover a significant portion of the cost of coverage. And the Medicaid program will be expanded to cover more low-income Americans.
