Africa Dream a Reality I HAVE given a lot of thought about the situation in Africa. I have looked at the continents history - how Africa was exploited, colonised and frowned upon as it was considered a poor continent. In fact, Africa is one of the richest continents in this world - if not the richest. But why is it that the continent cannot pull itself out of grinding poverty it is experiencing, considering all the resources Africa possesses? We dont need to look to elsewhere to see what we Africans have made Africa to be. There is a lot of corruption and betrayal. Foreign countries now own Africa. We have sold off our continent to the rich countries for petty cash. If we rebel, they would send in their troops to finish us off. Africans take peanuts for what is actually rightfully theirs. Westerners know how vulnerable we are. Westerners easily manipulate Africans because of things like hunger. We are encouraged to fight our own brethren. There is no hard feelings as long as our own families survive. We kill each other for peanuts. We need to re-think our actions as these same actions are selling us out. We need to start thinking big. We have people who are highly educated and we need to motivate our own people to see the greater vision and for Africa to become a more productive and rich continent. What we need to do is to practice more ubuntu like it was done when we were colonised. Our nature as Africans is to be strong, but we are often portrayed as weak, helpless and poor. We have been made to accept that we are inferior, and women especially, are the victims. They tend to think that they are not good enough to do anything by themselves. They dont like the colour of their skin or hair. They often want to imitate Westerners and bleach their skins to become lighter. They wear wigs, weaves or braids to have longer hair. That is to say they dont find themselves attractive and they think if they could extend the hair or become lighter they would have much greater chances of attracting someone. What is wrong with being African, what is wrong with the African image? Have we stooped so low? Why are we deceiving ourselves? Guys, we have watched too many films about white people. Let us return to being black and recognise black to be beautiful - and not some fake whiteness that we dont have. I lived in Germany and I witnessed a lot of Germans trying to get their skin darker by tanning it. I believe there needs to be a serious reality check on our side. If we dont value ourselves how will the United States of Africa come about? If we are already that low when it comes to our self-esteem or self-image - what is left of us? Wake up Africa: United States of Africa can become a reality. It doesnt have to be a dream that is shattered when we wake up. We ought to take a stand as Africans and claim our beauty and our heritage. Let us love our variety as Africans and our different shades that make us beautiful. Let us unite and stop chasing the whiteness and hair extensions from other continents. And let us concentrate on what makes us those special people who are ruling one of the greatest and most beautiful continents in this world. United States of Africa can become a reality if we set our minds to it. Let us strive for a better future for Africans and let us also explore our nature as Africans, that is full of undiscovered treasures and richness. Let us pride ourselves of being Africans and consider ourselves to be unique as people of one continent that loves and is beautiful
