African Pilot Aviation News 37 2014 • Monday 15 September 2014 “The ultimate authority must always rest with the individual’s own reason and critical analysis” Dalai Lama AAD 2014 sold out and there are 40 companies on the waiting list According to the show organisers, all the indoor and outdoor exhibition space at AAD2014 has been sold and 40 companies had to be turned down and placed on an exhibition waiting list. There will be 70 foreign military delegations from 50 countries scheduled to visit AAD2014, together with 13 national pavilions and 300 companies. A number of first time exhibitors include Uganda, Australia, Lithuania, Spain and the United Arab Emirates. At the time of writing 10 000 tickets had been sold for the airshow days on September 20 and 21. The South African Air Force will be flying and displaying the Gripen, Hawk, Rooivalk, A109 and C-130 while the SAAF Silver Falcons will show their precision formation aerobatics. The Air Force Museum will contribute a number of aircraft, such as the Vampire jet, Allouette II and III and Puma helicopters. On the civilian schedule Bombardier, Gulfstream and other manufacturers will be displaying their jets such as the Global 6000, Gulfstream G450 and G650. Bombardier will have a Q400 on display and Airbus Helicopters will have helicopters on show. The Airplane Factory will attempt to set a world record at AAD2014 by building a Sling 4 at the show, which is set to fly by the time the exhibition concludes. Less than three months after it performed its maiden flight, the Paramount Group Advanced High-performance Reconnaissance Light Aircraft (AHRLAC) will fly in to Waterkloof at the beginning of the show and be exhibited as a static display. As the first military fixed wing manned aircraft to be designed and built in South Africa in decades has already attracted considerable international interest. Unfortunately no unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be flying at Waterkloof. The organisers had hoped to have a UAV demonstration at Ditholo 50 km from Pretoria but this is not happening. However, the organisers noted that having UAVs flying is a priority for the next edition of AAD, by which time the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SA CAA) should have finished drafting regulations on the operation of UAVs in South African airspace. Nevertheless, more than a dozen companies will have their UAVs on static display. Firefighting helicopters will perform a demonstration during the show while Paramount will present an anti-rhino poaching demonstration using a Gazelle helicopter. Other highlights include a vehicle mobility track, which will allow military vehicles to show off their capabilities, as well as a mini-war feature with reality enactment. The US Air Force will feature a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III and Lockheed Martin C-130H Hercules. A full airshow programme will be available from early on Saturday morning for visitors entering the base. Sunday morning the landing of a Boeing 737-200 ZS SMD at Rand Airport On Sunday morning shortly after 10h15 a Boeing 737-200 ZS SMD arrived overhead Rand airport Flown by Captains Dennis Spence and Glen Warden the empty Boeing performed a perfect touch down on Runway 11 to turn off at the intersection of Runway 35. This aircraft will join the other significant airliners at the SAA Museum Society’s aircraft park at the top of runway 29. Congratulations to John Austin Williams (JAWS) and his team for preserving aviation history for future generations. Aviation humour An old drunk wandered into a Catholic Church in Ireland in a zig zag fashion and disappeared into the confession booth. The priest on duty watched and when he did not appear for a while thought OK he must want to confess and went into the adjoining booth. After 10 minutes of no sound or movement he knocked on the wall, a voice replied “No use knocking here mate there is no paper on this side either” Weekly News from African Pilot Should you happen to miss out on any edition of African Pilot’s weekly aviation news briefs, please visit the website: africanpilot.co.za and click on the Aviation News link on the front page.
