After UP, Kashmiri studentsharassed in Punjab College for Cheering For PakistanSrinagar, March 04: A dayafter 67 Kashmiri studentswere expelled from auniversity in Utter Pradesh forsupporting Pakistan cricket team in therecently held Asia cup, the Kashmiris studentspursuing higher education in Punjab statehave also complained of harassment onsimilar grounds.Kashmiri students pursuing BDS at the DeshBhagat Dental College & Hospital MukhtasarPunjab alleged that the non-Kashmiri studentssubjected them to harassment after Pakistanlifted the Asia cup by defeating arch rivalIndia. The Kashmiri students said that thenon-Kashmiri students not only harassed theboys but also harassed and abused the girlsduring the Sunday night.Speaking to GNS over phone from the college,one of the Kashmir students, who wished notto be named, said: On Sunday, we werewatching match collectively with other localstudents in College mess. We cheered forPakistan and they cheered for India. All wasgoing well, but once five overs remained inthe Pakistan innings, we left the mess becausewe thought Pakistan might lose, he said.He said that 27 students were undergoing BDScourse in the college. Out of 27, 20 are girlswhile the remaining are boys. Two of the boystudents are currently on leave.“Around 2:00 am, nearly 40-50 studentsgathered outside our hostel rooms and startedshouting and abusing Kashmiris,” the studentssaid.He quoted the non-Kashmiri students asshouting “Tum Kashmiri bahar aajao humtumhe kaat dengi”On Monday morning, the students tried tobring the matter in the notice of collegeauthorities. However, due to the absence ofthe Principal, they returned to their hostel.“Today, we met the principal and informedher about the harassment by our fellowstudents. She has assured action again them,”the student said.Admitting that there was scuffle betweenlocal and Kashmiri students, the Director ofDesh Bhagat Dental College & Hospital, DrBhatnagar, told GNS over phone that it wasbound to happen. The scuffle was bound tohappen because one side supported India andother Pakistan.We have sorted out the issue now. We havedirected both the sides to be in limits andfocus on studies. We have beefed up securityin the college and have directed them notcome out of their hostels after 10:00 pm, headded.Dr Bhatnagar said that all the necessarymeasures have been taken to control thesituation.We have directed students not tobring any phone fitted with camera. We dontwant any scuffle in the college over theseissues. All of them have to live here and studytogether for five years, he said. (GNS)
