After a welcome period of quieter weather, we’re looking at some more unsettled conditions returning, particularly later in the week when a low pressure system will bring wet and windy conditions across all parts of Scotland on Thursday. Colder conditions will follow on Thursday/Friday, bringing snow showers to the north of the country. A band of rain is sitting across parts of the Outer Hebrides at the moment, and this will move very slowly southeastwards across Scotland during the rest of Monday and through Tuesday. On current timings, the rain will clear the south of Scotland during the early hours of Wednesday morning. Colder air, fresh to strong northwesterly winds and showers will follow in behind the rain band, with the showers most frequent across the north and west, and giving snow on high ground during much of Wednesday. As ever in a northwesterly wind, much of the east and south will be sheltered from most of the showers. Westerly winds will start to strengthen across the north of Scotland during Wednesday morning, and these will gradually spread across all of Scotland during the overnight period and into Thursday morning, becoming northwesterly during Thursday afternoon and evening. The current forecast is for the winds to gust to 50-60mph, with the potential for 70mph across exposed western and northern parts. The winds will accompanied by a band of heavy rain, which will move southeastwards across the country during Thursday morning and afternoon. Once again, snow showers will follow the rain band, these affecting the north of Scotland during the second half of Thursday and through the morning on Friday. The winds will gradually die down from the west during Friday, although strong to gale force northerly winds will persist in eastern areas during much of Friday. The weather looks likely to quieten down, with a chance of some milder conditions again for the weekend. To reflect the forecast of gale/severe gale force winds across Scotland on Thursday and the snow showers across the north on Thursday into Friday, separate Yellow Alerts for Wind and Snow have just been issued. These are available on the Met Office website at metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=map Both Alerts are based upon an assessment of medium likelihood of low impact. Please see the following link for the types of low impacts that might be expected experienced from Wind and Snow metoffice.gov.uk/guide/weather/severe-weather-advice Please also take the time to have a look at this morning’s Flood Guidance Statement, which although all Green, raises awareness of the potential for high tides and large waves across the coastal areas in the north and west on Wednesday/Thursday, and eastern coastal areas on Friday.
