After doing some searching on YouTube for 3D printers I ran across this little gem: ~The Velleman K8200~ and have decided in order to save a lot of time and engineering to try and obtain it. Its about the same price range i was looking at for the scratch build and I can get it on Amazon! I was also looking at the assembly instructions on a PDF doc this morning and was impressed with the way they put it together. This is a nice device. its not the most sophisticated in the world but the thing can make its own parts to upgrade it and make other objects.
