After four tries, I found the murder mystery genre cramped and claustrophobic. I wanted to write about Europeans--politicians, diplomats, spies, Nazis, Communists, and those who fought for democracy. That meant a change of genre, to espionage fiction, and a change of time frame, to 1933 - 1942. I ended up having a lot of fun with spies fighting it out in salons and back alleys all over Europe. (Especially Paris, where I lived for seven years.) - Alan
