After last nights horrific events, the raid which took place 72 - TopicsExpress

After last nights horrific events, the raid which took place 72 years ago tonight raid was not only much shorter, but far less deadly. It lasted just 11 minutes, with high explosives and incendiaries mainly confined to the Rathbone Road area of Wavetree. Small fires were started and some slight damage was done, but overall the impact to that area was fairly minimal. However a curious aspect of this raid derives from the fact that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission list three people in Liverpool dying on the 30th November 1940 due to direct enemy action. Marjorie Cantwell lived in Freehold Street, Olga and Albert Strettle who lived in Mossley Hill Road and Violet Thomas, who lived in Wilfer Street. These are respectively in the Fairfield, Mossley Hill and Edge Hill parts of the city. None of them lived particularly close to Rathbone Road, and all died at home. Nor was there a raid on the night of the 30th/1st December to explain the deaths. This curious discrepancy between the police reports and the known facts suggests that even on relatively quiet nights such as this, full details of the nights raid are not always available.
