After my post on meditating through anxiety yesterday a FB reader - TopicsExpress

After my post on meditating through anxiety yesterday a FB reader asked me: How do you meditate for anxiety? I thought I would share the answer with yall too. Anxiety tends to involve overthinking/mental worry and/or a racing heart and revved up physiology. The way we conceptualize of it from an energetic standpoint is that there is too much energetic activity in the top of the body- head and heart. In order to dissipate the excess that is leading to overthinking and racing heart you want to ground your energy down. This is very different than the energetic pattern of depression which is more of a sinking energy. With depression we may choose a meditation style that would lift the energy in our body to create vitality. All in all there are different styles of meditation that will suit us each better overall but when you understand the energetic dynamics you can become more adept at assessing what will serve you when. For grounding meditation there are many options. Even just meditating out on the grass or sand is grounding a very helpful to soothe anxious nerves. When I have anxiety I often opt for a guided meditation simply because the voice of the teacher can already have a calming effect on my physiology and my mind can release its vigilance and come to a rest when I am following someone elses lead. My colleague Kelly Larson has a great guided meditation where you imagine growing roots down into the Earth that is the bomb. Yesterday I used a body oriented meditation by a Buddhist teacher named Reggie Ray. With this meditation you get to lay down on your back and go through the body releasing everything finally allowing your awareness to sink down into the Earth. It was game changing for me. You can download it for free here. Any questions? Ask them below! bit.ly/1quDks3
