After reading more than numerous posts about the mannerisms of TCU’s student section at the game Saturday, I feel like it is important to point out a few things everyone seems to be missing. First off, every school has a student section. No matter the school, whether it is Texas, OSU, a religiously-affiliated school like TCU, or otherwise, it does not concern us whatsoever how their students behave. We have those students, too. And frankly, the most disrespectful instance I witnessed at the game on Saturday came from an OU student who happened to be booing an injured TCU player while he was lying on the field for several minutes, an act much more classless than holding some joke of a sign stating that OU has ebola. Also, it looks bad on us as an organization to complain about going to a stadium each time we go because of how “terrible their fans are. Years ago, when Brittney Griner still played for Baylor, OU students and band members alike were asked to stop chanting, “She’s a man,” at Griner. If that’s not more devastating than telling Bob Stoops to “suck it,” I don’t know what is. In addition, in last year’s basketball band, I heard words shouted at particular players that were a lot more hurtful than somebody spilling a little beer on your uniform or flipping you off. All I’m saying is that if we all think that we are so much classier and respectful than other universities’ student organizations and fans, then let’s show it by being classier and more respectful, not by trashing their fans on social media, which just feeds into the negativity of the trip. It was a tough and emotional loss, but when it comes down to it, its just a game and we’re there to cheer on our team the same way they are. Boomer Sooner.
