After seeing Captain America 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy, Im - TopicsExpress

After seeing Captain America 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy, Im afraid that DC has a lot of ground to catch. To me, it seems like each Marvel movie has its own unique vibe that keeps the franchise fresh. Thats thanks to most of their movies having different directors, with each having their own vision or style for the movie, that you can clearly depict. I mean, you wouldnt even guessed that movies like Cap 2 was a sequel to Cap 1 if it didnt star the same character (Go back and try to watch these two movies back to back). On the other hand, I believe that DC has become infatuated with the Nolanverse-esque of film making thanks to The Dark Knight. Dont get me wrong, I love The Dark Knight and its one of the greatest movies of all time, but it did not feel like a Superhero movie for me. But because that film raked them in a ton of money, they tried to emulate that style with Man of Steel. I felt that bringing in Zack Snyder to film a Superman movie was somewhat of a mistake. When I think of Superman, I think of him as someone who haves fun with saving lives. There was only one scene in Man of Steel where it felt like I was watching a Superman movie and that was when he was learning how to fly. You could tell that DC wanted to instill some of the grittiness that was The Dark Knight Franchise into Man of Steel based on the cinematography and his costume. Both were darker in color in contrast to the previous Superman movie, Superman Returns. One could argue that it was a better Superman movie, even though it was terrible. Also, do not get me started on the two scenes where I felt were handled wrong in Man of Steel (i.e. Superman letting Johnathon Kent die, and Superman killing Zod. Those actions were not Superman-like actions). Im also led to believe that because of the failure that was Green Lantern and Jonah Hex, DC are too scared to venture off into more of a fantasy, sci-fi genre of movie. Honestly, Im worried that DC is unwilling to invest in making a movie that is set in a different tone than the Man of Steel or the Dark Knight Trilogy. Because of how much money those movies brought in compared to their other comic movies. Theres the Why change what isnt broken? mentality that can carelessly dig themselves in a hole, because if theyre unable to produce a movie that can differentiate itself, its going to become stale. and people will get sick of it. Its frustrating too, because Im betting that 10x more people are more familiar with Green Lantern than they are of Guardians of the Galaxy. Green Lantern couldve been such a better film than what we received, yet the effort to make that movie a hit was clearly not there. On the other hand, Guardians was a movie where I could notice that everyone was putting their best foot forward. James Gunn put in sweat and tears, and truly cared about making that movie the best it could be. Its somewhat sad albeit astonishing that people are probably going to remember Rocket and Groot over Hal Jordan in the coming years. The more and more Im seeing how the Batman v. Superman (Calling it Worlds Finest from here on out) unfolds, the more skeptical I am of it. Seeing the stills for the Trinity (Batman, Superman, and Wonder Women), has led me to believe that Zack Snyder is going to maintain his grounded, saturated style that youve seen from Sucker Punch and Watchmen. Its becoming a bit stale and I dont think his style correctly showcase what the Justice League is all about. The DC world is full of more vibrant colors than the Marvel Universe. More because DC has super heroes that arent 100% tied down to the problems of normal people. The stories for DC comics hardly ever focused on the day to day life of Superman being Clark Kent, brooding about the loss of Krypton and not knowing where he came from. Its about Superman doing impossible feats that men can only dream of.
