After spending $100 million, why have Brad Whitehead and Fund for Our Economic Future avoided the conversation on immigration-based economic development? Whitehead did not bring up a sensitive economic issue that the Fund has avoided: immigration. The immigrant communities of Cleveland and Akron are highly skilled but miniscule compared to the rest of the nation. Yet neither city has joined attraction efforts underway in other Midwest cities. Liu, in an interview after the forum, described immigrants as an economic imperative. She said Brookings researchers believe a regions success in the global economy hinges on its willingness to embrace diverse cultures and tap international talent.
