After the traumatic events of the morning, I decided to sit on my porch as the children walked home fom school. I was anxious to see how the city would react to safety precautions now that a tragedy has occurred. As suspected, little was done to ensure the children walked on the sidewalk and that traffic traveled at safer speeds. One unit DID appear for a brief moment and told the kids to walk on the sidewalk. He left and went to the 800 block, where he remained until the children passed. I asked two groups of kids to walk on the sidewalk. One obliged, after apologizing for walking in my yard. I assured him I would prefer this than have him walk in the street. The other threw his hands up in defiance. When I asked him WHY he wouldnt walk on the sidewalk he said, Dont want to!! ~sigh~ Shortly afterwards, a patrol unit parked along the side of the street. He sat there for UNDER 5 minutes. Miraculously, as he sat, traffic was SLOW. Children walked on sidewalks. It was a perfect world.
