Agong: Conscientious effort needed to instil patriotism: KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah hopes a conscientious effort would be carried out to instil the spirit of patriotism as shown by previous generations, including independence fighters. Tuanku Abdul Halim said he believed this could be done by incorporating history in a subject on nationhood or Islamic Civilisation and Asian Civilisation which were compulsory courses at the university. The King, who is accompanied by Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah, said he feared that the spirit of patriotism or love for the country among the people, especially the younger generation was waning while unity among the people was still in a fragile state and needed to be strengthened. Tuanku Abdul Halim was addressing the fourth convocation of National Defence University of Malaysia (UNPM), of which he is the Tuanku Chancellor, here today. A total of 524 students received their degrees comprising PhD (one), master’s degree (six), cadet officer graduates (274) and public officer graduates (243). Gen (R) Tan Sri Mohd Ghazali Che Mat was conferred with an honorary doctorate in defence studies while Col (R) Murad Jaafar, an honorary master degree in defence engineering. Muhammad Syahir Zulkurnain, 23, from Kuala Lumpur was named the chancellor gold medal winner for excellence in academics and co-curriculum while Khairunnisa Mohd Hairuddin, 23, from Ipoh, Perak was conferred with the royal education award. — Bernama dlvr.it/41R4LW
