Airports try coat checks to woo wintertime fliers TODAY IN THE SKY Ben Mutzabaugh, USA TODAY Have you ever arrived at your local airport for a wintertime flight to a warm-weather destination and wished you could just ditch your heavy winter jacket? Or – perhaps more importantly – that you didnt have to find room for it in the overhead storage bins? At least two airports are on to this problem, and theyre offering a solution, reports Joe Sharkey, the On The Road columnist for The New York Times. In Germany, Frankfurt Airport is allowing customers to check their coats at the airport prior to their flights. Fliers can retrieve their coats when they return. Frankfurt gave fliers the option last year, when it was part of a holiday promotion. The airport expanded the offering this year after it was a hit with passengers. Because of the positive feedback, we started the special coat offer earlier this year, airport spokesman Robert A. Payne tells Sharkey. Previously, passengers didnt really think of checking their winter coats. Frankfurt isnt the only location to offer such a service. Korean Air also provides a coat-check service at the Incheon International Airport near Seoul, the airlines main hub. Penny Pfaelzer, a spokeswoman for Korean, says the option is popular among the carriers customers. Who wants to lug a winter coast to Hawaii? shes quoted as saying by Sharkey. The cost at Frankfurt, Sharkey says, is half a euro per day – or about 67 cents. Koreans service is free for its customers. Posted by Charles Greenberg, Your Travel Agency
