Ajax Cape Town have confirmed that Khama Billiat’s proposed move to Mamelodi Sundowns has been called off with immediate effect. Ajax’s director Ari Efstathiou was quoted on the club’s Facebook page saying they have decided to call the deal off, because they feel the deal dragged too long. “Eight days ago Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns agreed on terms for the transfer of Billiat to the Pretoria based outfit, subject to the player agreeing on personal terms with the club,” Efstathiou was quoted on the club’s Facebook page. “We agreed to extend the time limit for the transfer to take place, however no agreement was reached at the set deadline. The deal is now considered cancelled,” concluded Efstathiou. Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza revealed on Metro FM on the same night [Thursday] that he will be in contact with Ajax management today [Friday] to hear if they are still interested in selling the player. “Ari is in the transition stage. He has just taken over control of the team and we need to give him space to apply his mind without pushing him, because I know the challenges at this early stage of getting control or to grieve with the team,” said Khoza on Metro FM. “I’ll phone him maybe on Friday [today], because this news is still fresh and hear what the story is going forward on this matter whether they give us an opportunity again to engage with the player, because we need the permission. “Given the permission [by Ajax], I will pursue the discussion, but if the matter is closed then I must also accept it,” said Khoza. With Khama Billiat reluctant to commit to Ajax beyond June 2014, the Urban Warriors are likely to accept the Pirates’ offer for the player, and the Zimbabwean could be a Buccaneer sooner rather than later. However, Billiat will not be able to play in the current Caf Champions League campaign should he sign with Pirates, because Bucs have added William Twala and Joseph Molangoane to complete the list. *KTM
