Akure stands still for late Dejion December 03, 2013 / in News 12:51 am By DAYO JOHNSON AKURE — AKURE, the Ondo State capital, stood still yesterday as both commercial and business activities were completely paralysed following the demise of the prominent traditional ruler, the 46th Deji of Akureland, Oba Adebiyi Adesida. The Oba until his demise Sunday morning was the Chairman of the state Council of Chiefs. His palace was turned into a Mecca of sort, yesterday as people both low and high in the state trooped in their hundreds to pay their last respects as his body lay- in- state. Oba Adesida was made to seat on his throne dressed in his royal regalia with horse whip and the beaded crown on his head. As the people passed-by, they greeted him while an aide who stood by him responded on behalf of the late Oba. People waited for hours to have glimpse of their traditional ruler who reigned for just three years and three months. The late Oba Adesida’s reign was the shortest in the history of the Akure dynasty. All the shops across the Akure metropolis were closed in response to the demise of the Oba. Reports said that all the shops would remain closed for seven days according to the tradition. Meanwhile, the traditional rites called Ijo Akure began yesterday at the Palace of the Asamo, one of the kingmakers. This according to sources within the palace would equally last for seven days. The next traditional ruler of the town now moves to the Osupa Ruling House. Oba Adesida was from the Ojijigogun Ruling House. Meantime, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has described the death of Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Adebiyi Adesida, as very sad and shocking. The governor, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Hakeem Bello said the death came barely a fortnight after attending the marriage ceremony of the respected monarch’s son in Lagos, adding, “the news of Oba Adesida’s demise came as a complete shock.” Also, former Governor of Ekiti State, Chief Segun Oni described the death of Oba Adebiyi Adegboye Adesida, as shocking and devastating, saying, “It never for once occurred to me that we will lose Kabiyesi this soon. “Those of us who knew Oba Adesida as our Egbon cannot, but be grieved at the loss of such a role model and national figure, who contributed immensely to the development of Ondo State in particular and Nigeria in general.
