Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore: Lets get real, he said. Lets learn our history. Lets stop playing games. Moore spoke to the Pastors-for-Life in Mississippi in January 2014 Moore argues that religion, as defined in the First Amendment, applies only to God the Creator. Everybody, to include the United States Supreme Court, has been deceived as to one little word in the first amendment called religion, he said. They cant define it. Moore insisted that freedom of religion applies only the God of the Bible, and therefore the protections of the establishment clause do not extend to other religions, such as Islam and Buddhism. They dont want to do that, because that acknowledges the creator God, he said. Buddha didnt create us. Muhammad didnt create us. Its the God of the Holy Scriptures. According to Moore, the government and the Supreme Court should define religion as James Madison and George Mason did – The duties we owe to the Creator and the manner of discharging it. They didnt bring a Koran on the pilgrim ship, Mayflower, he said. Lets get real. Lets learn our history. Lets stop playing games. Moore quotes from the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which Mason wrote with help from Madison. Heres the full text from Section 16: That religion, or the duty which we owe to our Creator, and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence; and therefore all men are equally entitled to the free exercise of religion, according to the dictates of conscience; and that it is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, love, and charity toward each other.
