Alberto Pasinis Circassian paintings and drawings Alberto Pasini (1826-1899) was an Italian painter, best known for depicting Orientalist subjects in a late-Romantic style. He is considered one of the finest European Orientalist painters. Unlike many of his contemporaries who created their Orientalist paintings in Paris studios based on secondary accounts and arranged studio props, Pasini undertook numerous trips to the Middle East. In a series of exquisite paintings, he has documented the life and times of the Circassians in Constantinople and Damascus in the second half of the 19th century. Pasini was obviously fascinated by the air and mannerisms of the Circassians. His “Circassian Cavalry Awaiting Their Commanding Officer at the Door of a Byzantine Monument, Memory of the Orient” (1880) is considered as his most famous painting (Photo 1). The portraits indicate the high visibility of the Circassians and the important military and administrative roles they played in the Ottoman Empire at the time. Pasini’s “Circassian” portraits and drawings have both historical and artistic values. Some of these fetched more than a million dollars in auctions. Here are some of his “Circassian” works.
