Citizen Action Training School Now Accepting Applications Our Sound, Our Community, Our Chance The Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group, in partnership with the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, is now accepting applications for the Citizen Action Training School! This free program funded by the Puget Sound Partnership will be offered throughout the Puget Sound region in 2013 and 2014. Bellingham will host the first session starting this September. The Citizen Action Training School, or CATS, will include the watershed ecology and civic education and engagement components with a focus on Puget Sound Recovery. CATS participants will be future community leaders who are aware, educated, and active stewards and advocates for our local watersheds and the greater Puget Sound. Participants will receive 50 hours of free training over 3 months, and will give back by volunteering at least 50 hours to plan and complete a service project in their community. The service projects must be related to the Puget Sound Partnership’s Strategic Initiatives: 1) Prevention of Stormwater Pollution, 2) Protection/Restoration of Habitat, 3) Recovery of Shellfish Beds. Check out the program website at rfeg.org/cats for more information. Applications for the Bellingham session are due by August 14, 2013 and classes will be held every Wednesday from 6-8:30 PM from September 18th until December 4th (except for 11/27/13- that week class will be on a Monday evening), with the occasional Saturday field session from 10 AM – 4 PM. To apply, contact Lucy DeGrace at the Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group at [email protected] or 360-336-0172. CATS is a great opportunity for anyone interested in Puget Sound recovery and the fate of our shorelines, especially those who want the tools to be active in their community. The training sessions will be conducted on a diverse spectrum of issues related to Puget Sound recovery and by presenters who are experts in their field. This is a fantastic opportunity for students, government officials, concerned citizens and others to get a great education on both the natural and human communities of Puget Sound.
