Album Review Time! Lets talk St. Anger by Metallica. Now, if you are a Metallica fan, or a metal fan in general, you might think that Im going to say something along the lines of This album is absolute garbage! Theres no guitar solos! It sounds Nu-Metal-ish! Blah blah blah. WRONG SIR! I am actually going to go into depth with this record. Complete delve into everything in this record. The riffs, the drums, the bass, the lyrics, and the overall execution. Now, I will say this about the drums. There arent great, hell, Ill say it, they are terrible. Yes, it sounds like Lars is beating a metal trash can with a ball peen hammer, but thats not all that makes it terrible. Literally everything about the drums are terrible. The overall way that Lars went about the drums on this record is terrible. Everything seems out of place. The sound is just terrible. It is very evident that Lars talent has somewhat deteriorated over the years. The guitar work on this album is kind of so-so for me. I think that its fitting for the record, but the record only. If this album had the same guitar tone as albums like Ride the Lightning or Master Of Puppets, it wouldnt work. I dont think it is their best material, but still good nonetheless. The bass. I will say this: I love Rob Trujillos bass work. He can play a freaking bass man! Hes no Cliff or Jason, but he is still pretty great! I honestly dont see why he gets the hate he gets. The lyrics. The lyrics on this album is some of the best that Metallica has put out. Enough said. I think the production on this album could have been a lot better. They should have definitely had a better producer because it is evident that Bob Rock has no idea what he is doing. I personally believe that he is the reason that Metallica changed. Sure, the guys in the group also changed, but Bob Rock sure influenced it. Overall. I honestly dont see why this album is looked down at. Sure, it is my least favorite Metallica record, but it is still a solid record. I personally believe that its because of the drums and the fact that it sounds like Nu Metal, but thats what was being played at the time. Overall grade: Id give it a 7.5. Best Song: For me, Invisible Kid or Purify Would I recommend?: I would, but only for people who are willing to accept change within a band.
