Alex Salmond claimed he had legal advice confirming an easy passage to the EU for a separate Scotland. It turns out no such advice ever existed. He has threatened to default on Scotland’s debt if he doesn’t get his own way in negotiations over the currency. He has even hinted that his Plan B on currency is for Scotland to use the pound like Panama uses the dollar. This is despite the fact that doing this would mean, as the Bank of England has said, that Scotland would have to build a massive stockpile of cash amounting to at least £21 billion. This is equivalent to almost twice what we spend on the health service every year.
