Alex and I got back home about 11:00 last night. We spent the past 5 days at the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival in Harlingen, Texas. Had a really good time. Went on three field trips. One was a drawing class - the purpose was not so much to draw a great picture of a bird but to learn observation skills which will help in bird identification. The second was a pontoon boat trip on the Rio Grande River. The third was a trip to a ranch using techniques to increase the value of the habitat for wildlife. Also attended several seminars. All field trips and seminars were conducted by some of the top bird experts in the country. Alex and I added several lifers (the bird watchers term for birds you have seen for the first time) to our collection of birds we have seen. One was the Hooked-billed Hawk which is a Mexican bird that sometime flies across the border into Texas. The other bird was from South America - the Amazon Kingfisher - which has only been seen in Texas once before.
