Algoma (Sometimes spelled Algomah,is one of the most notable ship names in the Great Lakes area. Henry Ford his own self built the engine for the first one, it wrecked on Isle Royal...It was made of wood. The next one, the iron hulled Algoma was the first ship to haul cars across the Straight of Mackinac..It towed a barge. The Algomah II is my favorite boat ever...Classic style...A great little ship...It used to be a ferry to Mackinac Island...When Queen Elizabeth did a tour of the Straights, there was a twenty one gun salute from Fort Mackinac. They used modern cannons. They were transported there by the Algoma II. I know because I was being transported too. To this day there is an Algomah. It is owned by the Arnold Line, and is still in use because it can carry a lot of people. Not to brag, but but I was behind the wheel of that boat two years in a row. Its not that hard. You just keep it aimed at Mackinac City...Leave it to Vince, the consummate salesman...I remember his opening line to the captain...Hey how about givin a young boy a thrill? Next thing I knew I had a big boat in my hands... So I like this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algoma_Central
