Ali Ibn Abi Talib (ra) once in a fierce battle overcame his enemy and just as he was about to strike him, the man spit in his face. Ali (ra) got up to the shock of that man and everyone else saying that he stopped because before I was fighting you for Allah, and now Im fighting you for myself. The lesson we take from this is that sometimes in striving for a noble cause, our egos and agendas overcome our intentions and in the process spoil the cause as well. Being sincere in the beginning is not enough and we have to be sincere to our sincerity and know when and how to act.
