All of the pictures being posted about 4501 are bringing up some special memories of the time I got to spend with another great old Mikado class locomotive, LASTAs SP 745. I was blessed to be able to take this old gal out on the mainline for the first time in 48 years and later take her on a 1000 mile, 25 city trip on 4 different Class I railroads pulling the Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial Train. This great video was taken by Cary Anderson although this run was actually in late March 2005 and yours truly is at the throttle. There was actually a film crew that followed the entire trip for a documentary, but when they were in final production, Hurricane Katrina hit the studio and everything was destroyed. Thankfully, there were many railfans who did a great job of documenting the trip. In this clip, the old girl is stretching her legs on her original ex-SP territory on the mainline between New Orleans, LA and Houston, TX. It was rather emotional when we headed out of Avondale yard onto her old mainline.
